Description

This, hands on, learn by doing, in-depth workshop is designed for anyone seeking to obtain a solid grounding in the theory and practice of appreciative inquiry – e.g.- managers, consultants, human resource professionals, organizational and community facilitators - anyone concerned with minimizing resistance while achieving rapid change within human systems.

AI has been used very successfully with large change initiatives like program evaluation, restructuring, mergers, acquisitions, and for relational processes such as union/management relationship, diversity as an asset, and preparing the workforce to shift from hierarchy to horizontal team based processes. AI is particularly useful in turbulent environments.

Rather than just another technique or tool, AI is presented as a radically innovative approach to the whole field of organization development and community change. The program focuses on energizing positive change in organization/community direction and culture. Most importantly, this workshop grounds participants in the concept of the emerging paradigm and what it means to “be AI” rather than just “doing AI”.

Workshop Goals
In addition to experiencing and examining the 5 “ D’s ” of the AI process (Definition, Discovery, Dream, Design, Destiny/Delivery),workshop you will:

  • Appreciate the research, principles and practice of AI by experiencing each phase of the AI process (Definition, Discovery, Dream, Design, Destiny)
  • Explore many case studies of AI as applied to Leadership Development, Strategic Planning and Implementation, Evaluation, Diversity, Process Improvement, Culture Change, Organization Redesign and other change agendas
  • Practice appreciative question construction, interviewing, topic identification and reframing of problems to opportunities.
  • Assemble the positive core of an organization/group and construct compelling images of the future. Experiment with translating the dream into systemic changes and engaging people in self organizing for implementation.
  • Synthesize skills and theory by providing co-consultations and support on participants’ back-home applications
  • Receive a detailed manual/reference guide.

"The AI Foundations workshop was full of all the elements needed to begin to incorporate the approach into your work and life....theory, group work, stories from the field by AI practitioners, self-reflection and the completion of the next steps you will take to continue the AI journey. This was all customized to respond to the interests of workshop participants in addition to being fun!"
~~Julie Girard, Healthcare (2011)

Of all those that I have taught in AI courses around the globe, there is one colleague that stands out for her knowledge about AI and her amazing skill for imparting that knowledge and skill to others. Maureen McKenna is a master teacher of Appreciative Inquiry with experience of both teaching AI and using the AI process as a master consultant. Many years ago, a colleague said: "The best tribute to others in our field is to say, 'I'd send you in my place.'" There is no doubt about it. I would at any time, in any situation, send Maureen McKenna as a gifted AI practitioner to teach and consult in my place, confident in the knowledge that she would surpass the expectations of all those with whom she works.
